ABOUT BRIDGET APPLEBY
Every person grows at their own pace and in exactly the way they need to in order to survive. Inevitably that process includes challenges that can feel unbearable, like it’s going to go on forever, and sometimes a profound fear can set in that nothing will change; we can feel angry, hurt, anxious, or hopeless. As a professional therapist, I am equipped with clinical knowledge and experience to provide quality, evidence-based therapeutic interventions intended to decrease distress and dysfunction in a timely manner. My formal education has allowed me the opportunity, however, to sit in the most enlightening teaching space of all: with people who are willing to share their suffering with me.As a result, I know that for many healing isn\'t always just a reduction of symptoms or reframing cognitive distortions. We can logically know something isn\'t supported with evidence but still feel it deeply, like heavy baggage or an old wound. Healing also isn\'t limited to a number of weeks of therapy work, or even months; people aren\'t incapable of change because of their age. This can be frightening for some, because the implications are that healing can potentially look like a lifetime of soul-searching work with little to no relief. When my evidence based theories and interventions fall short in my sessions with clients, I come back to the basic principles of my art as well as my humanity. I embody my natural curiosity. I use my compassion. While I listen to my clients, I am also listening to my body and my instincts because that is how I am able to deepen my connection and understand others. Ultimately, I listen to what surfaces in me because I am confident in my ability to lead with that valuable information. This is also how I know that my clients -and every person- possesses the incomparable, natural guiding light within themselves to heal.My philosophy is that every person is already capable of being the most secure attachment figure to themselves in order to confidently lead themselves through whatever challenges they face. My work is to model these qualities to my clients and empower them to access their innate healing potential. My work is also to slow down, to allow time and space for my clients to hone their listening skills to the signals in their bodies. When I know that my clients have everything they need to heal themselves, the rest comes naturally.“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished” -Lao Tzu
