About Brianna Tomlinson
I\'m a mixed methods researcher with a Ph.D. in Human-Centered Computing. I care about understanding people, how they use technology, and how technology can better support their needs. My current focus is on the hardware user experience, and includes questions around fit, comfort, social acceptability, and use. My dissertation work focused on evaluating effective methods for studying engagement and learning in multimodal interactive systems. This included collaborating with PhET Interactive Simulations to develop and evaluate accessible auditory displays for their educational simulations. A great deal of my prior work focused on how we can effectively use auditory displays and sonification (non-speech audio) to support state & relationship understanding and how these displays could provide meaningfully inform listers about complex relationships. My prior work focused on how user-centered design can create experiences which support the needs of diverse user groups. I have researched, designed, and completed usability studies for an accessible weather app on Android (iOS in progress). I have led research and design of a multimodal solar system planetarium installation at the Fernbank Science Center. My dissertation leveraged the audio solar system mappings to determine the impact of auditory displays on engagement and learning within the Universe Sandbox. I was a recipient of the 2019 Campus Life and Community at Georgia Tech Scholarship, and was a 2019 Foley Scholar Finalist.
