ABOUT BRIAN BARNES

Dr. Barnes is an Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Detroit, Michigan. His research program evaluates the long-term health outcomes of those suffering critical illness. To support this work, his research group links ICU health records with data sources that capture patients’ disposition and outcomes after hospital discharge. The long-term goal of this research is to characterize the impact of ICU drug interventions on patients’ outcomes (e.g. hospital readmission, one-year mortality) and experiences after hospital discharge. This work seeks to improve the quality of life of patients who survive critical illness.He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Kansas (KU) School of Pharmacy Between he completed residency training in pharmacy practice and critical care at Barnes-Jewish Hospital on the Washington University Medical Center campus in St Louis, Missouri. As part of a NIH clinical research curriculum program he earned a MS in Clinical Research from KU\'s School of Medicine in 2010. He was a faculty member at the KU School of Pharmacy between 20••••23. In 2009, he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. While practicing at The University of Kansas Health System, he led an interdisciplinary research group who studied postoperative arrhythmias, bleeding, and thrombosis after cardiac surgery. In 2012, he was promoted by KU to Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. During the 20••••13 academic year, he was a Senior Administrative Fellow in the Office of the Provost. He served as Associate Dean for 7 years overseeing a faculty-led assessment, curricular revision, and reaccreditation of KU\'s PharmD program. In 2019 he returned to the faculty to reestablish a research program and advance to full professor. Since 2020, he has served on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)- Healthcare Safety and Quality Improvement Research study section. In 2021, he was granted a Researcher Without Compensation appointment within the Veterans Affairs research enterprise. In 2023, he relocated to Detroit.He is the recipient of the Rho Chi teacher of the year award (2003, 2019), preceptor of the year award (2004, 2006, 2023), the KPhA distinguished young pharmacist award (2005), and the KSHP board award for outstanding clinical research (2005). In 2022, he was acknowledged for his volunteer work during the COVID-19 pandemic by the Acute Care Pharmacy division at The University of Kansas Health System.
