About Brian Fontaine

I know it’s cliché, but I have always wanted to be an Architect. As a child, I gravitated towards building houses with Legos and Lincoln logs, which led to drawing houses and neighborhoods on any piece of paper I could get my hands on. I loved drawing family and friends’ houses and reconfiguring the plans, adding floors and changing roof lines. In almost any space I have experienced from a young age and now, I ask myself the same question; How can this space be better? My dad is a woodworker by trade, so I was lucky to see some of my designs come to life as a teenager. Our first project together was a pair of storage shelves for my cousin; I drew them, he built them. Over the years, we’ve design-built several furniture pieces and decks. These projects further drew me to architecture and the process of taking an idea to paper, with the result being a product or space you can see, use and experience. Graduating with my MArch in 2010, my first architecture jobs were in retail design. I enjoyed the fast pace of design and construction and found there was an instant gratification of seeing a design come to life. With that fast pace, I have found comes fast turnover, and repetitiveness. Over time, I transitioned to higher education and institutional design, which I found to be more gratifying and interesting to work on with more complexity and a lasting impact to the surrounding environment and occupants. Experiencing how projects make a positive impact on their community is extremely fulfilling to me. Early exposure and curiosity for design have shaped my education and career and help drive me every day to provide the best service and solutions for my clients and partners.
