About Brian Kim
About halfway through a Mechanical Engineering degree, I realized that I probably wouldn\'t be happy in a typical engineering job, but I did happen to make my first visit to Universal Studios. While watching the Conan the Barbarian stunt show, it suddenly dawned on me that there must be an industry behind all of that cool stuff. I headed straight out to L.A. after graduating, where I made a living working on projects for theme parks, TV, and film. At some point, I ended up working with the Projection department at Disney. Projection and video back then were done with analog methods such as film and LaserDisc, but I could see that the industry was quickly turning digital, and that I should too. I spent the next few years teaching myself 3D modeling, animation and rendering, motion graphics, and realtime 3D game engines. During that time, I also had to learn things like how to build a render farm and how to configure and control AV equipment just to be able to produce and output my work while I learned. When I returned to Disney, I ended up producing pre-vis CGI for attractions, digital media for use inside the attractions, and game levels. In addition, I was still designing and building practical effects and helped out in the AV and R&D departments. When my time at Disney came to an end, I realized the one thing I couldn\'t do, but desperately needed to do, was write code. So after an invaluable stint in Lighting System Design, I started on my master\'s degree at NYU\'s ITP (Interactive Telecommunications Program,) where I learned to code in various frameworks. And with that ability, I was finally the person who could tie the physical world to the digital world. I am a 2:43 marathoner turned avid cyclist, though sadly, I\'m a lot better at running than I am at cycling.
