ABOUT BRIAN HARTMANN

Brian Hartmann is President and CEO of NorthStar Clean Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS). He was named to this position in 2021. NorthStar owns and operates over megawatts of generating capacity across the United States with over megawatts in active development and construction. NorthStar’s asset base includes gas, biomass, solar, wind, and storage and its products include capacity, energy, RECs, carbon credits, and onsite decarbonization solutions. NorthStar has annual operating revenues of over $300M and employs 270 people. In his role as President, Hartmann is responsible for overall strategy, growth, operations, and financial performance of NorthStar. Previously, Hartmann was Executive Director of Corporate Strategy for CMS and Consumers Energy where he led the company’s strategic planning process and initiatives focused on improving customer experience, optimizing the grid to reduce customer costs, and decarbonizing the natural gas system.Prior to joining CMS Energy, Hartmann was an Associate Partner with McKinsey and Company and a leader in McKinsey’s Electric Power and Natural Gas service line. He served clients on a wide range of topics including setting strategy, developing digital capabilities, and transforming operations. Hartmann earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, both from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, as well as a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science from the School of Natural Resources at the University of Michigan. He also holds a certification in Financing and Deploying Clean Energy from Yale University.
