About Brian Thomas
I earned my doctoral degree in 1992 from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University and was the recipient of the Lauren A. Woods Award for outstanding graduate research in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. I then accepted a position as a Research Scientist at RTI International where I provided expertise in pharmacology and analytical chemistry to a diverse group of organizations, including the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke, the National Institute of Justice, the U.S. government’s Drug Enforcement Administration, and commercial clients. I was awarded RTI’s President’s Award on 3 occasions, and served in adjunct faculty appointments in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology and the Hypertension and Vascular Research Center at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and in the Department of Chemistry at North Carolina Central University. I have also served as Senior Director of DIscovery Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, and Pharmaceutics at Canopy Growth, and as Director of Analytical Sciences at The Cronos Group. I have published over 120 peer-reviewed manuscripts, co-authored two books and numerous book chapters. I am a Fellow of the College on Problems of Drug Dependence, and was recently elected to serve on the organization\'s Board of Directors (20••••30). I was also honored to be named a 2025 Mahmoud ElSohly Award recipient by the Cannabis Chemistry Subdivision within the American Chemical Society\'s Division of Chemical Health & Safety, and in June of 2026, I will receive the International Cannabinoid Research Society\'s Lifetime Achievement Award in Dijon France.
