About Brian Murphy

For over two decades my work experience has centered around laboratory automation as well as forensic DNA analysis. Currently, I am an Automation Managerwith Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In this capacity I am responsible for all laboratory automation including automated liquid handlers and automated storage freezers. I am responsible for a number of duties including method programming and development, training and staff development on automated technologies, documentation of automated procedures (SOPs) and providing technical expertise to departmental leadership in terms of technology development and new assay automation. Prior to that, my experience was mainly with automated platforms to increase throughput in the laboratory for daily production operations. Processes that I have automated are DNA sequencing, SNP genotyping and DNA extraction, quantification and amplification for STR analysis. I also managed a team of scientific and IT professionals through a variety laboratory automation projects. I spent ten years with the New York State Police as a Forensic Scientist conducting forensic serological and DNA analysis methods on evidence collected from crime scenes. I have performed forensic analysis in over 500 criminal cases and provided expert testimony in over 30 cases. Following my tenure with the NYSP, I spent nearly two years with Hamilton Robotics as a Field Applications Engineer. In this capacity, I worked directly with customers to help them maximize their automation potential for a variety of different scientific processes.
