ABOUT BRIAN JUST

I have been a professional sweet pepper breeder since 2004.I work or have worked as the lead breeder in several different markets in the USA, Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, and Israel with a supporting/collaborative role in Europe. I have been responsible for continuing success in established breeding programs as well as building new programs from the ground up. With my diversified experience, I now have a global view of sweet pepper germplasm. I believe that the success of a breeding program is driven by the creativity and vision of the breeding team, their ability to appropriately adopt enabling technologies to add speed and efficiency, and the strong organizational support from product management, product development, and sales. Throughout my career, I have been an early adopter of enabling technologies such as high throughput molecular markers and double haploid breeding lines. My program is responsible for germplasm characterization, line development, hybrid creation, and evaluation. I have enthusiastically worked with Technology Development and Sales to advance several pre-commercial and commercial products in these markets. Products coming from my program are industry leaders for disease resistance and yield. I have also made notable gains for earliness and fruit quality in many segments.I have been heavily involved in trait genetics and mapping projects, both as a lead and in supporting roles. Some of the projects I have lead or worked on are powdery mildew resistance, phytophthora resistance. fruit quality, and nematode resistance. I am currently a key partner in several ongoing trait projects.I truly enjoy my job and would like to develop myself further as a breeder by working on more diversified markets and concepts. I am also excited to be training some new breeders in the art of vegetable breeding.Specialties: Classical plant breeding, line development, hybrid breeding, marker assisted breeding, sweet peppers, breeding strategy, fruit quality, trait genetics, international projects.
