Composite Technician Lvl 3
Jun 2023 — Present · US
As a Lvl 3 Aviation Composite Technician specializing in the F/A-18, I possess a comprehensive skill set covering advanced composite and structural repair techniques essential for military aircraft maintenance. I perform complex repairs on 250°F & 350°F cure carbon sandwich & laminate structures, as well as metal airframe components. My repair process begins with damage removal, followed by combined cycle moisture removal & detailed thermal surveys to prepare composite materials for bonding & curing. I utilize DVD processing & advanced vacuum bagging to ensure resin consolidation & void reduction, critical for repair integrity. I am proficient in wet layup repairs & overlay applications, including precision work on tight radii under one inch & multiple ply drops within repair areas.Scarfing & ply id are key aspects of my role, where I perform single & double-sided scarfing on sandwich structures, adhering to strict ply limits & size restrictions to maintain airworthiness. I also conduct edge trimming, sanding, & finishing to ensure smooth transitions & optimal bonding surfaces.I apply heat blankets, including multi-zone configurations, place thermocouples for accurate temperature monitoring, & conduct thermal surveys to maintain cure temperatures up to 375°F. I manage curing processes using ovens, autoclaves, & hot bonders, ensuring compliance with MIL-SPEC & FAA standards.I also bond metallic & non-metallic materials using film & paste adhesives & perform structural metal repairs involving riveting & bonding to restore airframe strength. Interpret complex engineering drawings, NAVAIR manuals, & Boeing Process Specs to execute precise, compliant repairs.I maintain meticulous repair docs & collaborate w/ engineering, QA, & maintenance teams to resolve complex challenges. I lead & mentor junior techs, providing OJT to support their development & certification progression. I ensure efficient, accurate repairs in full compliance with regulatory & company standards.
