Process Engineering Intern
Jul 2025 — Present · Durham, NC, US
I interned at Growth Curve Bio, a benchtop to pilot-scale precision fermentation CDMO, as a Process Engineering Intern. I received hands-on training on upstream (USP), downstream (DSP) processes and process development. I developed analytical laboratory skills, such as aseptic technique/handling and supported fermentation processes on the 2L to 100L scale.• Commissioned and decommissioned bioreactors (2-100L) for batch/fed–batch fermentation (E. coli & S. cerevisiae), ensuring equipment readiness and adherence to SOPs• Controlled bioprocess parameters (DO, pH, temperature, agitation, pressure, feed rate) in BioCommand® SCADA Software, maintaining optimal culture growth and troubleshooting process deviations• Assisted engineers to optimize DO cascades and feed pumps, reducing foam-out risk and process disruption• Supported DSP by harvesting fermentation broth via Alfa Laval Clara20 disk stack centrifuge• Performed in-process sampling on batches for analytical/biochemical testing (contaminations, glucose concentration, cell stress, OD600)• Assisted fermentation scientists on seed train expansion by performing aseptic handling during inoculations, culture transfers, and bioreactor sampling
