About Brian Gatens

I handle professional liability claims (financial lines, lawyers, miscellaneous professionals) as a Claims Officer at Liberty Mutual / Ironshore. I previously handled environmental and mass tort claims at AIG. After law school and clerking, I practiced at a national firm where I defended professional liability cases at trial and on appeal. I regularly appeared in court, from arguing dispositive motions to defending cases at trial. I take a creative, practical, results-oriented approach, looking at issues from different angles to find innovative strategies.I am especially proud of my public service, having served as a Firefighter and EMS Lieutenant in New Jersey. I have extensive training in responding to hazardous materials incidents and have received numerous awards, including being a three-time recipient of a nationally recognized hospital\'s EMS Excellence Award. I received a special commendation for, while off-duty, successfully resuscitating a person in cardiac arrest. I was also awarded a Meritorious Service citation for my part in a dangerous vehicle rescue that led to the successful save of an accident victim.In addition, I have served as an appointed member of the Paramus Environmental Commission and the NJ Supreme Court Committee on Women in the Courts. I previously was on the Board of the LeGaL Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization which advances LGBT access to legal services and strengthens the LGBT bar. Proudly, I have also represented clients, pro bono, with the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund.I have taught undergraduate Law and Political Science courses at both Montclair State University and John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
