   The average U.S. K-12 building is 40-years old and has outdated equipment, control systems, and lighting fixtures that are either inefficient or failing. According to the U.S. General Accounting Office, more than a quarter of American students attend school in buildings below standard or even dangerous. Nearly two-thirds of schools have air conditioning or lighting that needs repair or replacing. School utility costs have soared due to inefficient energy usage and rising costs. These often stem from fundamental design issues or flawed equipment implementation. They can also come from poor operating control systems, such as economizers that don’t work properly or the inability to schedule building system occurrences effectively. In other cases, the new systems were not commissioned properly. At the same time, school systems face tighter budgets and dwindling resources which delays fixing issues or maintaining equipment properly.
