About Brenton Johnson

I am the founder and farm manager of Johnson’s Backyard Garden (JBG), an organic vegetable farm and CSA (community supported agriculture) operation in Austin, TX. I initially began seriously thinking about food production in the early 1990s. I believe that human energy consumption practices need some serious reconsideration. Born in Alabama, I grew up with an awareness of the challenges facing farmers. Through my work with JBG, I have aimed to strike a balance between these challenges and the resource-consuming aspects of food production. I continue to strive for constant improvement and community involvement through the most earth-friendly, biodynamic-conscious, organic farming methods.    I am the founder and farm manager of Johnson\'s Backyard Garden (JBG), an organic vegetable farm and CSA (community supported agriculture) operation in Austin, TX. In 2004 I planted the first seeds in the yard of my east Austin home, and soon after began selling vegetables at the downtown Austin Farmer\'s Market on Saturdays. I quickly ran out of space for my kids to play. In 2006, I purchased 20 acres and moved to the new land with my wife Beth and my four children. Then, in 2008, I quit my job to farm full-time. Since then, the farm has grown from servicing 30 CSA families to over now cultivating nearly 200 acres of land. I work with an amazing team of hardworking individuals who like to make things happen.
