About Brent Sharp Derrick
The best Chinese food I’ve ever had was in Kabul, Afghanistan. Someone on our team stumbled upon it one day and it became our go-to lunch location while working on the new US Embassy.Unique experiences are the best part of my job. I love that I have a profession where the opportunities for something new are just a part of the job. But you must take advantage of them. This keeps you fresh and engaged.Over my career I’ve worked on various projects from highly technical data centers to Diplomatic reception rooms. To make the project easy, you find out what is like past projects you’ve completed BUT to make them interesting, you actively seek out what is different.Afghanistan was a challenging project. I remember the wonderful food as well as hanging from a basket hoisted by a crane while bombs were being detonated on the nearby hillside. You grew to respect and trust your team. And you grew to understand that we all have something to bring to the table and successful projects can be attributed to the people who work on it. Like when my luggage was lost and there was not a Walmart or Target for thousands of miles. My team came together with a supply of T-shirts, socks, toothpaste and anything else I needed. I was tired of wearing the same thing every day, but they all took it in stride. From my experience, I have found that good relationships make the best teams. Focus on people’s strengths and LISTEN to what they have to say. Know when to stand firm and know when to bend.I’ve dealt with local government unrest, custom shutdowns, labor strikes, language barriers and countless other obstacles to working all over the world. I find that if you keep perspective, communicate with your team and maintain realistic goals, it will work out.And in the process, you might just find that great Chinese restaurant – in Afghanistan.
