ABOUT BRADLEY KARLIN

Dr. Karlin is a national leader in transforming and innovating behavioral health (BH) care. Over the past 2+ decades, he has led some of the largest efforts to transform BH care delivery in several of the nation’s largest payor and provider systems and federal agencies. In his current role at ARPA-H, he leads breakthrough innovations in BH detection, measurement, and response for federal agency charged with developing revolutionary changes in health. He is the first psychologist and BH professional to serve in this role. He is also Adjunct Full Professor in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Scientific Advisor to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Dr. Karlin previously served as President of Solutions for Mental Health Change and as Vice President and Executive Medical Director of Behavioral Health for Highmark Health, the second largest payor-provider system in the nation with annual revenue of $25+ billion. In this role, he served as the executive clinical leader of BH care and led development and execution of the enterprise-wide BH Strategy to transform the clinical and business model of BH care. He also served as PI of multi-million dollar grant-funded initiatives to advance proactive, personalized, evidence-based, upstream-focused and data-informed BH care. Dr. Karlin also served for 7+ years as National Mental Health Director for Psychotherapy and Psychogeriatrics for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, where he developed and oversaw the nation’s largest implementation of 15+ evidence-based psychological treatments and training of MH staff, leading to robust therapist and patient outcomes reported in 20+ journal articles. He also developed innovative care models.In addition, Dr. Karlin served as Vice President & Chief of MH and Aging for the global consulting firm, EDC, where he led EDC’s work with public and private systems to implement evidence-based treatments and to transform MH and dementia care. Dr. Karlin is a Past President of the Society of Clinical Psychology and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. He is the author of 100+ publications and has received numerous national awards, including the inaugural Award for Outstanding Contributions to Continuing Professional Development in Psychology from APA, a Commendation from the Secretary of Department of Veterans Affairs, the Outstanding Administrator Award from the VA section of APA, the Spotlight Award from the APA Division of Psychologists in Public Service, and the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
