ABOUT BEATRICE PODTSCHASKE

Since September 2021, I am a Professor of Management in Health Care and eHealth at the Institute for eHealth and Management in Healthcare (IEMG), Flensburg University of Applied Sciences. Previously, I was the Manager User Research at Intuitive, and responsible for partnering with engineering, design, marketing and other user-and customer-facing parts of the organization to study users’ needs and behaviors. Professionally, I explored multiple disciplines, working at the intersection of psychology, engineering and management in a variety of industries, including arts, education, finance, construction, and health care. I conducted my first market research study almost two decades ago and gained overall 17 years of experience in human-centered design as a health care delivery and social science researcher and human factors engineer.After earning a master’s degree in Business Administration and Economics from the Technical University in Berlin, I worked for a consultancy that specializes in health care with focus on supply chain management and logistics. My interest in interdisciplinary fields led me to pursue a PhD in Human-centered Design and Human Factors Engineering in Health Care which became my great passion. I held various positions as a Human Factors Engineer and Researcher at Intuitive, Stanford Health Care, Stanford University, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health as well as the Human Factors Engineering and Product Ergonomics Department at the Technical University Berlin.I am a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), the Relational Coordination Research Collaborative (RCRC), and the Institute for Health Care Systems Management Berlin Collaborative (HCMB eG) in Germany. I am also a Harkness Fellow Alumnus in Health Care Policy and Practice and a B.Braun Foundation Alumnus for Young Leaders in Health Care. I earned multiple awards and grants for my research and teaching and led an array of research and quality improvement studies (e.g. in anesthesiology, intensive, emergency, oncology, radiology and gerontology care) in Germany and the U.S. investigating, e.g. human experience of care and health technology as well as high value care performance in specialty care (endocrinology, cardiology, nephrology and oncology care). I have authored and peer-reviewed multiple scientific publications and have done professional presentations and educational lectures nationally and internationally in Human Factors and Systems Engineering in Health Care and Product Development.
