If I was limited to doing just one thing to help businesses around the world move forward confidently, I would change my typical job description: senior vice president for risk management. Two words get in everybody’s way: “risk” and “management.”In the dictionary, “risk” means being exposed to danger. But the second and most valuable aspect of risk, exploiting opportunities, is what drives me. Yes, sometimes you have to \"manage risk\". This is a necessary but reactive approach, and on its own, ins not good enough. Neither is just finding risks. Each situation is different and always changing, sometimes hour by hour. Yet I must lead companies to accommodate risk along the path to growth. It’s up to me to strike just the right balance between rapid analyses and strategic planning if we are to gain market share. And so I thrive living in two closely integrated worlds. Mastering the geopolitical environment is both challenging and rewarding. I have to get the trends right—the first time. I must draw upon my broad and deep experience in every aspect of business to help leadership exploit opportunities better, faster, and perhaps more cheaply than our competitors.Yes, sometimes the outcome is measured in dollars. But what is most rewarding to me is guiding companies to know they don’t just have to accept risk or change themselves to adapt.
