For almost thirty years, I had the pleasure of working with a group of mavericks and trail-blazers advancing two concepts that go to the core of investment and business purpose, strategy, operations — and governance. Starting at the Social Investment Organization (now the Responsible Investment Association) and continuing through my 20 year career at Ethical Funds, NEI Investments and Aviso, I advanced the idea that investors should incorporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into their decision-making in order to manage risk and generate long-term sustainable returns for investors. Further, I have advanced the idea that the purpose of the company is to go beyond providing returns to shareholders but also to have regard for the interests of other stakeholders including employees, customers, suppliers and communities effected by company operations. Today, I serve as Sector Lead, Finance for the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) working with investment institutions to advance the world\'s leading responsible mining standard.
