I help to connect people to the National Aviary by conducting community-based citizen science research and also communicating about the many ways that the National Aviary staff uses its expertise in avian research, conservation, husbandry, and medical care for the benefit of birds in Pittsburgh and around the world. I provide written, spoken, and on-camera communications with local, national, and international media concerning birds, ornithological research, and conservation at the National Aviary and in the surrounding communities. I have conducted research on avian life history (notably molt and ecomoprhology), Northern Saw-whet Owl migration, extra-limital winter hummingbird occurrences, backyard bird survival and productivity across an urban to rural landscape gradient (i.e, Neighborhood Nestwatch project of the Smithsonian Institute), and effects of habitat management on grassland and shrubland birds. I perform educational outreach, lead local bird walks, conduct seasonal bus tours to local and regional points of birding interest for non-birders, beginning birders, and experienced birders alike. I answer hundreds of questions each season from the public about birds via telephone, email, and social media. I provide information upon request to Aviary staff concerning details of the natural history of birds in the collection.
