About Bernardo M. Rocamora
I\'m currently a robotics research engineer at L5 Automation, Inc, a startup that is trying to bring abundance to the world through automation. We\'re starting by building the first autonomous strawberry harvester that can pick strawberries under the dense foliage of the plants during peak season in outdoor conditions. Previously, I graduated with my Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at West Virginia University. My Ph.D. research focused on robot motion planning for navigation in cluttered environments, working at the Field and Aerial Robotics lab under the supervision of Dr. Guilherme Pereira. I\'ve worked as the manipulation lead, and system integration and autonomy co-lead for the WVU Robotics team which placed 6th out of 114 teams in one of NASA\'s Centennial Challenges (NASA Space Robotics Challenge Phase 2). Strong familiarity with (at minimum) the following: Matlab, C++, Python, ROS, Gazebo, OpenCV, CAD, Prototyping.
Experience
Robotics Research Engineer
Jan 2024 — Present · Los Angeles, CA, US
Motion Planning and Manipulation Lead- Created Gazebo simulation of a strawberry harvesting robot with synthetically generated and randomized worlds (strawberry farms)- Implemented a tool for robot arm\'s workspace reachability studies to inform design decisions- Designed and built a 1,500+lbs strawberry harvesting prototype robot to support two robotic arms with 7th axis- Implemented autonomy architecture for the robot using behavior trees (BehaviorTree.CPP)- Implemented 3D occupancy mapping (Octomap, Region-of-Interest Octomaps)- Implemented viewpoint planning techniques and optimized exploration through viewpoint routing using ORTools (TSP)- Implemented a robot localization pipeline (Visual Inertial Odometry + GNSS + Extended Kalman filters)- Implemented position-based dynamics (PBD) to simulate deformable objects- Implemented genetic algorithm optimization to find optimal displacement vectors to interact with cables and fluid lines- Developed novel strawberry ripeness estimation techniques- Developed ML models to estimate strawberry features.
