Blane Long is a Certified Value Specialist (CVS®) with over 40 years of experience providing innovative project management, value engineering (VE), risk management and training improvements to enhance projects of all sizes. Blane is currently the Director of Value Engineering and Project Risk Management for HDR Engineering. Prior to coming to HDR Blane worked over 2 decades for the Washington State DOT (WSDOT) serving in a variety of roles including Statewide Value Engineering Manager and Statewide Project Development Training Manager. Blane has led or been a team member on over 250 VE and Risk workshops and the net cost avoidance to his clients is in excess of $5 billion. Blane’s approach to value engineering supports practical design efforts currently being used by multiple agencies. He brings the necessary knowledge to reduce project costs while being flexible in his approach to VE, which is essential for project success.Blane has been a leader in integrating other tools and processes to customize the VE process to meet the needs of the project and the client. One such process combines the proven tools of a cost risk assessment (CRA) workshop with those of a VE study. The CRAVE process is used to assist Project Managers in decision support as well as minimize and mitigate quantified risks. Blane currently lives in Olympia, WA with his awesome wife, 2 dogs, 1 cat and a flock of chickens. He enjoys hunting, fishing, riding SxS’s and spending time at his uncle’s winery.
