ABOUT BRANDON JOHN OCONNELL
I am currently working as a post-doctoral research associate on the ROSEHIPS EPSRC programme grant, in the world-leading Dynamics Research Group (DRG) at the University of Sheffield. My current research interests include statistical finite-element modelling, Bayesian hierarchical modelling, Gaussian processes, operational modal analysis, and uncertainty quantification for system identification. In early 2025 I completed my Ph.D. in the DRG at the University of Sheffield, researching and developing novel probabilistic and Bayesian approaches to operational modal analysis and system identification for the uncertainty quantification of modal (dynamic) characteristics.Before starting my PhD, I graduated with a 1:1 (first-class) MEng (Hons) degree in Aerospace Engineering with a Year in Industry from the University of Sheffield. During this time my studies were primarily focused towards Engineering Design, Structural Dynamics, Astrodynamics, Propulsion, and Advanced Manufacturing.As part of my undergraduate degree course, I completed several industrial placements. These include a 15 month placement at Dyson Technology Ltd, with the first 12 months spent in Research (TRLs 1-5) on a variety of novel projects and technologies, and the last three months spent working in New Product Innovation (NPI) on new concepts, within the Environmental Care team. I also undertook a three month placement at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in the composites manufacturing team, research new methods of robotic machining of composite parts. Throughout my degree programme, I have consistently engaged with several extra-curricular engineering activities. For over six consecutive years I volunteered as a representative of the iForge Student-led Makerspace (the first of its kind in the UK) and was responsible for maintaining the workshop, helping solve unique problems and ensuring the safety of our users. For three of those six years, I also worked as the Relations Manager for the space responsible for: engaging internal and external visitors, sponsors/donors, and industrial contacts.
