About Bish Paul

Dr. Biswajit (“Bish”) Paul is a scientist and civil-rights advocate who has dedicated his career to advancing equity and social justice. He currently serves as the policy lead for the Washington State team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He is a scientist, and civil rights advocate whose previous work has straddled legislative advocacy, policymaking, research analytics, education reform, & community activism. In 2018, he was named National Educator of the Year, and, in 2021, he was featured as a \"Local Icon\" in the Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement exhibition at the MoPOP museum.

   As a Senior Program Officer for Washington State Initiative & Washington Charters, I develop, lead and implement a policy and advocacy strategy in support of the Gates Foundation\'s goals for the state. We focus our investments in education, especially in two areas: the transitional point in a student’s education journey: enrollment after high school in a postsecondary program that will lead to meaningful employment, and the building of a healthy and high-quality public charter school sector. In Washington State, we work with local and regional partners to help students see a clear path to success in the careers they choose, with an emphasis on young people who face the highest barriers, including Black, Latino, Indigenous and rural students, and students from low-income backgrounds.
