ABOUT BIOWIN TUBAF
BIOWIN (Added Value from Biomass through Integrative Upcycling Strategies) is a research project aiming to develop holistic and sustainable upcycling strategies for the circular valorization of agricultural and forestry residues into high-value, biobased functional materials. The project is led by Dr. Vanessa Castro and funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Free State of Saxony.BIOWIN is an ESF Junior Research Group consisting of three PhD researchers from three institutes at TU Bergakademie Freiberg:• Institute of Nanoscale and Biobased Materials (INBM) – Dr. Katja Heise• Institute of Thermal, Environmental- and Resources’ Process Engineering (ITUN) – Dr. Volker Herdegen• Chair of Corporate Sustainability and Environmental Management (CSEM) – Prof. Simon Glöser-ChahoudThe goal of the project is to create integrative, transdisciplinary upcycling concepts that combine innovative biomass processing and material development with continuous sustainability and economic assessment along the entire value chain. By linking experimental research with data-driven evaluation models, BIOWIN aims to improve resource efficiency, circularity, and transferability to industrial applications.The project runs from November 2025 to October 2028. Through close links to industry, research networks, and the Freiberg Center for Circular Economy (FCCE), BIOWIN aims to strengthen Saxony’s innovation capacity and support the transition toward a resilient, low-carbon, and circular materials economy.
