I have designed and taught a new course,\"Writing for The New York Times: Journalism Essentials.\" The class, aimed at high school students with an interest in journalism, focuses on the fundamentals of the craft - news literacy, detailed street reporting, vivid deadline writing, careful fact-checking and collaborative multimedia projects. I have engaged nearly 50 students from 10 countries and various regions of the United States in lively discussions on journalism ethics, descriptive writing, interviewing techniques, news judgment and more. Students hear from a range of journalists and visit sites across New York City. The course now serves as a model for classes taught by other Times journalists under the same title.
