Across the country and the world, the forces of change are outstripping any group, individual, or movement’s efforts to protect, restore and maintain the things we care about most dearly. There is a meaningful conversation happening across our nation at this moment. It has been going on for some time now. It’s hard to hear behind the everyday noise of politics, economy, and culture. Communities of all shapes and sizes are rethinking what it will take to ensure their futures will have healthy, productive, and ecologically resilient landscapes. These conversations include one of the following:How to work across geographic, cultural, and institutional divides with groups and organizations with different perspectives than us;How to reach out and learn new ways of working with underrepresented communities; andHow to work outside of purely legalistic frameworks to preserve and restore landscapes through work on broader cultural and ecological concerns, such as climate change and environmental justice.We need organizations, people, and institutions helping to make sense of the opportunities and challenges this moment presents. And we need to create a place for experimentation and risk-taking to reach a greater understanding of what it will take to grow as organizations to achieve our vision of healthy, whole communities.
