About Jean Bikomeye

With over a decade of experience spanning East Africa and the US, I have spearheaded community development initiatives, notably in women and youth empowerment across Public Health, Agriculture, Education, and Career Advisory sectors.During my work in Africa, I led strategic partnerships for esteemed US-based organizations in Rwanda and executed multiple community-based projects. This included leading the nationwide rollout of a career planning system with Kuder Inc, distributing clean water in remote communities as the Executive Director of ADAPT for Rwanda, and providing farming inputs directly to community members managing distribution centers and local logistics, with support from Musco Lighting, LLC.During my time as a graduate student at the Medical College of Wisconsin, my research was deeply rooted in community engagement, with a central focus on addressing the underlying causes of disparities to promote health equity. Throughout my academic journey, I have contributed to various scholarly publications covering a wide range of topics, including institutional racism, health disparities, environmental injustice, and the complex interplay between climate change and health. In addition to my research endeavors, I have assumed leadership positions within the student community, serving as co-President of the Student Leadership Collective and Vice President of the Graduate Students Association. Furthermore, I have actively participated in institution-wide executive committees, such as the President’s Inclusive Excellence Award Selection Committee, and engaged with community councils, including serving as the adult member of the City Youth Commission. Additionally, I have contributed my time and expertise to local nonprofit boards, including involvement with a local food pantry, demonstrating my commitment to community engagement and service throughout my academic career. In my doctoral dissertation, I examined the relationships between breast cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and urban greenspace, using both large electronic medical records and national datasets. I found compelling evidence suggesting protective effects greenspace to both breast cancer and cardiovascular diseases outcomes.Career Objective: To leverage my education and expertise to enhance health outcomes and create lasting community impact through research, education, and partnerships. Seeking roles in assistant professorship or leadership in Climate change & Health initiatives. My moto: Act locally, make a global impact!
