For 31 years I worked for the government agency that sets the Rateable Value of all commercial property in the country.My role at the Valuation Office Agency covered all aspects of Non-Domestic Rating work. For the current 2017 Rating List, I set of Rateable Value for properties in Lincolnshire which, in cash terms, will yield around over the four-year life of the list. I’ve been heavily involved in all the revaluations since the 1990 Rating List. As well as compiling part of the Rating List, I dealt with thousands of Business Rates appeals in my time. This involved complex negotiations with ratepayers, or their appointed agents, and, in the event settlement couldn’t be reached, I would appear at Valuation Tribunal to argue my case.As a result, I have an intimate knowledge of the workings of the VOA. I know how their valuation schemes are structured and set up, and I know what to look out for to make sure properties have been consistently valued.
