About Bibhab Kumar Talukdar

Engaged with applied research and conservation of wild flora and fauna in Northeast India since 1989. Founded Aaranyak in 1989 with some of my neighbours and friends. Initially started my career as bird ecologist, specially Anatidae and other waterbirds, later from 1996 started my focus on ways and means to complement the effort of Assam Government towards multi-dimensional conservation activities to secure the greater one horned rhino in Assam. Since 1997, generated resources through Aaranyak to support radio communication equipment, vehicles and motorbikes, other field gears in rhino bearing areas in Assam. With proactive support from legal experts practicing in Gauhati High Court, I got actively involved with legal orientation workshops on wildlife, forest and environmental laws targeted for forest officials initially and later on to other law enforcement agencies including judicial officials with the key aim of enhancing conviction of wildlife criminals in India. In 2011 initiated K9 Sniffer dog units and in collaboration with Assam Forest Department, provided K9 sniffer dogs initially in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and later on in Kaziranga NP of Assam. By 2018, K9 Units of Aaranyak has been further expanded with 6-7 working Dog units of Belgian Malinois breed which were put into service in four rhino bearing areas of Assam. Building young bands of budding conservationist in Northeast India has been a dream which could be achieved in phases through diverse capacity building efforts and hand holdings. The training to budding conservation worker and professionals have been a part of my life in past three decades. Have been a regular invitee as resource person for in-service college and university teacher’s orientation courses and faculty induction programme coordinate by the UGC-Human Resources Development Centre of Gauhati University for past six years. Also act as a resource person at the Central Academy for State Forest Service, Burnihat, Assam. Have been involved with rhino capture and translocation in Assam since 2005. Gained experience in capture and translocation of about 20 wild greater one horned rhino in Assam and one in West Bengal till end 2022. Took part in South Africa with in 2013 and 2014 in gaining knowledge on capture of wild white rhino, black rhino, lions, Zebra and Wilder beast under the guidance of then head of Wildlife Veterinary Services of SANParks, Dr. Markus Hofmeyr. Being a wildlife biologist and managing Aaranyak with 140 staffs also excelled the needed management expertise and administrative skills over the year.
