ABOUT BIANCA ANTONIA HERRERA
As a graduate student at Columbia University\'s School of Social Work, I became equipped with experiences and tools to pursue anti-carceral social work. Rikers Island was the center of my two-year journey. As I worked with individuals on Rikers Island while at The Osborne Association, I learned about the depths of trauma that involvement with the criminal legal system creates for individuals and their families. Working with the Katal Center to fight for the closure of Rikers Island taught me that policy and organizing is the key to ending mass incarceration and investing in communities. As a recent graduate, I intend on using my experiences and tools to continue the work of reform and abolition by creating new policies that will support communities impacted by incarceration.
