About Bhawna Rathi
I am a doctoral candidate in Music Technology at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), working under the supervision of Dr. Timothy Hsu. My research lies at the intersection of digital signal processing (DSP), machine learning, and biomedical acoustics, with a current focus on the automated detection of vocal pathologies. I employ time-frequency domain analysis, feature extraction techniques (e.g, MFCCs, jitter, shimmer), and supervised learning models to identify pathological vocal characteristics from sustained phonation and connected speech samples. In parallel, I am developing advanced noise reduction algorithms for headsets and voice-enabled software platforms. This involves adaptive filtering, spectral subtraction, and deep learning-based denoising frameworks to improve signal quality in low-SNR environments, particularly for real-time applications in telemedicine and voice monitoring systems. My work is driven by a commitment to improving voice health diagnostics and enhancing the robustness of audio capture technologies through intelligent, data-driven solutions.
