ABOUT BEVERLY EGBEDI
I am a Lecturer in Education whose work sits at the intersection of the psychology and sociology of education, with a particular focus on early career teachers. My research explores how school cultures, leadership practices and professional relationships shape teacher identity, belonging, wellbeing and long-term career decisions. I am especially interested in how teachers experience their first years in the profession and what makes them stay.Drawing on constructivist perspectives, social network theory and qualitative methodologies, my work centres teachers’ lived experiences and examines the psychosocial dynamics that influence professional identity formation and retention. Alongside my research, I teach undergraduate and postgraduate education students in areas including applied pedagogy, teacher identity, resilience and the social contexts of schooling. My approach is grounded in the belief that education is not only academic, but relational and deeply human. Before entering higher education, I gained professional experience across primary and secondary contexts and am a registered teacher (TRCN; GTCNI). These experiences continue to inform my scholarship and teaching. I am currently completing a PhD examining early career teachers in Nigeria, focusing on identity, belonging and the decision to remain in teaching. I am also developing a practice-informed book for beginning teachers. I am passionate about contributing to conversations around teacher preparation, wellbeing and sustainable professional cultures.
