About Betty Chen
I am a postsecondary access and success leader based in New York City, committed to leveraging the power of relationships and communities to help young people imagine and inhabit the futures they want for themselves. My work is rooted in relationships, commitments, and investments. I\'ve invested myself in the work of building community, within extant hierarchies, even under extraordinary circumstances and the crushing yoke of capitalism and white supremacy.Students describe me as “that woman who is in their messages all the time,” but also as an invaluable supporter, cheerleader, and advocate, and that “they wouldn’t be where they are without me.” Colleagues appreciate my canny just-in-time support, supportive mentoring, intuitive design of materials, sleek systems, initiative and flexibility. Founding high schools (two of them!) have benefitted from my ability to understand and re/shape academic and culture systems to build investment from all stakeholders: scholars, faculty, and caregivers.I am honored with the scholars and families who have trusted me to audaciously tell their truths and illuminate what is possible. I am indebted to the mentors, colleagues, and friends— mostly Black and Latinx women— who have been gracious with their time and energy that have allowed me to be the colleague, leader, and friend I am. I am grateful for the community who has taught me how to laugh, learn, and care fiercely together. Please reach out with facilitation, consultation, and creation requests, whether in college access, staff development, or math instruction!(I spend Saturdays teaching SHSAT Prep and Algebra 1!) I have successfully presented in a range of audiences, and I am skilled at creating turnkey curriculum and content for a variety of college access, success, and DEI topics. I pride myself on being a financial aid expert, and any colleague will tell you that I dorkily throw myself into the details. I am an engaging facilitator who has successfully trained 100+ individuals in anti-racist support, student centered counseling, and responsive access instruction. This future is only possible with community engagement and investment. Let\'s do this.
