Betsy Fabricant is currently working at Footsteps in Manhattan as the Director of Support Services. Footsteps provides educational, career and social supports to those seeking to enter or explore the world beyond the insular ultra-religious communities in which they were raised. People from the ultra-orthodox and Hassidic communities who choose to enter mainstream America do so as new immigrants in every sense. They face cultural disorientation and isolation coupled with a lack of practical and marketable skills. Founded in December 2003, Footsteps aims to assist individuals who choose to make this difficult transition. Footsteps is the only organization in North America serving this population. For over 22 years, Betsy worked as an administrator with VISIONS, a nonprofit serving youth, adults and seniors with vision loss. In that role, Betsy designed and managed an array of programs for people of all ages who are blind and visually impaired and their families. As senior administrator with oversight of community and residential programs, Betsy recruited, hired, trained and supervised program directors, administrative staff, volunteers and interns, managed budgets and provided facility management of a 35 acre residential site. A thread that runs throughout Betsy\'s career is a fundamental commitment to ensuring that populations otherwise marginalized secure pathways to independence and self sufficiency. Consistent with this commitment, in 1981she helped found the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless (ECHH) and has been an active board member throughout its history. By providing a full range of services and programs, the “Coalition” helps homeless individuals and families meet their most basic needs while working toward a more stable future. The ECHH was the first advocacy service organization exclusively focusing on the needs of homeless people in the State of New Jersey.

These courageous individuals struggle to redefine their lives despite punitive reactions from family and friends, little if any secular education, a lack of experience with modern gender roles, and, in some cases, a limited command of English.Footsteps is the only organization in North America assisting people on this journey. Based in New York, Footsteps provides a range of services, including social and emotional support, educational and vocational guidance, workshops and social activities, and access to resources. Thanks to Footsteps, former ultra-Orthodox Jews have a safe, supportive, and flourishing community to turn to as they work to define their own identities, build new connections, and lead productive lives on their own terms.
