ABOUT BETH COX
Is your organisation committed to creating content that is truly inclusive? But.Your teams are well-intentioned but feeling a burden of responsibility.A fear of getting it wrong is inhibiting creativity.Working with people with lived experience has transformed some books but staff are still second guessing themselves. You are not alone. Inclusion in publishing seems to be all everyone is talking about and there\'s a growing expectation that children\'s books are inclusive. Publishing is generally a pretty liberal, well-intentioned industry. But good intentions will only go so far. If your teams are not quite sure HOW to embed inclusion in books, and are too worried to admit this because they feel they should know, creativity will be seriously inhibited.I\'m an inclusion and equality consultant and I specialise in working with publishing teams to help them understand the basic principles of inclusion to elevate the books they work on, making them stand out in the market. I focus on practical action. Theory is all well and good, but without action nothing will change, and this is where my hands on experience, over nearly 20 years, of making every book I work on incidentally inclusive comes into play.Working with me ensures your teams have- a consistent approach to inclusion and accessibility- confidence in creating new content that is authentically inclusive- an understanding of how small changes can have a big impact- an awareness of common pitfalls to avoid- prompts for creating inclusive content- a bank of resources for researchI\'ve been working in children\'s publishing since 2003 and making books inclusive since 2005 when I joined the steering group for the Scope In the Picture project, but my interest in inclusion started long before that. I grew up in rural Dorset, so my exposure to a diverse range of people was limited, and that’s one of the things that drives me now. I’ve worked with disabled children in various roles and I\'m also a solo mum to a donor-conceived child, so have a non-traditional family set-up myself. I\'ve seen the impact of inclusion in real life and this is what motivates my work. I\'m also the co-founder of Inclusive Minds, an initiative to champion inclusion, diversity, equality and accessibility in children’s books that connects publishers with young people with lived experience of marginalisation. If your organisation is looking to publish inclusive children\'s books that are simultaneously creative and reflective of todays diverse world, contact me at b•••@bethcox.co.uk to arrange a chat.
