ABOUT BERNARD LAWLESS

Bernard is the Compliance Manager for Laboratory Medicine in NHS Lothian. Previously, Bernard was a Lead Assessor and Assessment Manager, for Medical Laboratories (ISO 15189:2012 and ISO 22870:2016), in the Healthcare Section of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).Prior to working in UKAS, Bernard was the Compliance and Quality Manager for Filament PD. His primary roles included the development of a Class IIa medical device, regulatory aspects and compliance of numerous other products for Filament PD’s clients. Furthermore, he managed an ISO 9001:2015 compliant Quality Management System (QMS) which he led the implementation of; this QMS was being adapted to ISO 13485:2016 compliant.Bernard has extensive experience in the fields of medical device development (Class I, Class IIa and Class orthopaedic implants, biostability of biomaterials, mechanical testing and tissue biomechanics. Bernard has a deep understanding of ISO and ASTM standard methods. His PhD dissertation, from his European Industrial Doctorate/Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher (ESR) position, investigated the biostability of a spinal implant and its long-term implantable biomaterials. He has 19 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 14 conference proceedings in fields ranging from biomaterial degradation to mechanical testing of implantable orthopaedic devices. Bernard is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and is a Member of IMechE (MIMechE).
