ABOUT BEN L. BYNUM
Under my leadership, CHF’s Impact Investing Workgroup and program staff identified three directives to guide its impact investing (II). Scaling innovative solutions, leveraging additional financial resources and assisting partners to address inequities are three directives of CHF’s impact investing. Below are examples from our $128MM II portfolio.SELECT ACHIEVEMENTSNational Institute of Medical Assistant Advancement (NIMAA) – NIMAA is a nationally accredited online educational platform that allows a lay person to become a certified medical assistant (MA). NIMAA operates in a dozen states and partners with local community health centers to offer classes and clinical lessons locally. Role: One of CHF’s first impact investments under my leadership, the Foundation was NIMAA’s first funder outside of its founders. Having headquartered its national model in Denver, NIMAA has graduated over 80 MAs that now serve Colorado’s safety net with 70% of NIMAA’s graduates in CO identifying as Latino.Statewide Fund for Resident Owned Communities – Managed by the ROC-USA and Thistle, the Fund supports mobile home communities across CO to purchase the land underneath their mobile homes through a cooperative structure. The fund has stated goals to outreach, engage and possibly finance BIPOC and immigrant communities.Role: As one of the early funders, CHF structured its impact investment as first loss capital to partner with banks to increase the overall commitment to the Fund. A recent CO law allows communities a brief window of time to purchase their own mobile parks.Rural Housing Fund – Community partners led the creation of a toolkit to aid rural communities across CO to execute on initiatives to offer local residents access to new communities comprised of 15-20 housing units. The Fund leans towards offering affordable homeownership opportunities.Role: CHF’s impact investing team provided an early impact investment to support planning and execution. Once launched, CHF is offering a non-cash loan guarantee to support 2.5% interest mortgages for homeowners.Ute Mountain Ute Tribe Broadband Project – The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe is a key partner to CHF. The Tribe has a comprehensive plan to invest in reservation land that overlaps with CHF\'s geographic interests. Previous funding supported a health clinic, grocery store and affordable housing. Role: CHF provided an impact investment that allowed the Tribe to meet the matching requirements of a $4.2 million state grant. Successful completion of the project would eliminate the recoverability aspect of CHF’s funding.
