About Benjamin Sutlive
After obtaining my medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia(MCG) I completed a residency in anesthesiology at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB). I then went on to complete a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesiology at UAB and obtained board certification in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Since finishing training, I have practiced general and cardiothoracic anesthesiology at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. My practice consists of a significant amount of complex cardiac procedures including minimally invasive mitral and aortic valves, TAVRs, and mitral valve clip procedures. I have a passion for TEE and I am continually honing my skills to aid surgeons before, during, and after surgery. In addition, my practice has busy obstetric and orthopedic services allowing me to be very proficient in regional and neuraxial anesthesia.Another area of interest is in the development and implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols. ERAS is an evidence-based way to improve patient care and outcomes which I am passionate about achieving. In addition, I am an advocate for patient safety. I believe there are too many errors made in medicine and I continually work to ensure that these are prevented as much as possible. I serve on numerous patient safety and review committees with the end goal of improving patient care and outcomes.Finally, I completed a Master’s of Science in Health Administration (MSHA) at UAB in August of 2019. Through this program, I have learned aspects of healthcare and management that are not part of the medical school or residency curriculum. I hope to use this knowledge to improve the value and safety in delivering healthcare within my group, hospital, and the healthcare system as a whole.
