Serving the Gateway Program, Vehicle Systems Integration (VSI) Vehicle Equipment Lead. Vehicle Equipment is responsible for integrated planning, project oversight, and threat mitigation of Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) to users across the Gateway platform. This function includes the acquisition of common equipment to be provided as GFE to Gateway Elements, including International Partners.The Gateway Program GFE is considered where there is significant benefit for hardware commonality, cost efficiency (limiting duplicate development costs), NASA expertise, or long lead times for development or manufacturing.Also responsible for the Maintenance and Sparing (Mx) for systems. The Gateway Vehicle Equipment Mx Team works to facilitate and integrate design, logistics, maintenance, and sparing activities to ensure supportability and considerations for service life beyond 15 years across Gateway.

Focused on team leadership that enables incorporating lessons learned into an executable Programmatic baseline while improving the design for manufacturability, increasing production efficiencies, meeting Stakeholder commitments, and delivering space flight hardware for Agency use.Served the Stages Element Office within the Space Launch System (SLS) Program. Was the Stages Manufacturing & Production Manager responsible for the design, development, qualification, manufacturing, production, and flight of SLS Stages including management and integration of technical, schedule, safety, financial, and legal aspects from the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana. Additional roles included Final Assembly Lead and Cryogenic Tanks Lead.In July of 2008, Mr. Birkenstock joined the Civil Service as a Propulsion Discipline Integration engineer supporting the Ares I Upper Stage Systems Engineering (SE) and System Definition (SD) Product teams. He has contributed to the design and development of the Liquid Oxygen (LOX) propellant damper. Other assignments have included being a Technical Management Team member for the Heavy Lift Broad Agency Announcement (BAA), a Systems Engineer for the Space Launch System (SLS) Core Stage development effort, and a technical assistant with the Office of the Director at NASA\'s George C. Marshall Space Flight Center.Mr. Birkenstock has worked as an Aerospace Engineer since 2005. As a contractor, he supported the Space Shuttle Program Propulsion Systems and Integration (PSE & I) Office during the Return to Flight effort. He worked as a project integration engineer and gained experience with flight hardware from the Space Shuttle Main Engines, External Tank, and Main Propulsion System elements.A native of Hartland, WI, Mr. Birkenstock earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering Mechanics and Astronautics in 2004 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
