I have worked on many different projects at different stages of the project cycle, which has helped develop me into an adaptable and well-rounded engineer.Feasibility- bridge options reports for new highway or footbridges- structural review of a series of structures as part of a highway improvement scheme and feasibility study for changing the highway alignment on an existing bridge, to avoid replacement- FRP strengthening feasibility report and outline design- grade II listed bridge refurbishment options study- approval in principal documents- experience in bidding and production of fee proposals.Construction- carried out the role of NEC4 Supervisor for a bridge refurbishment project and canal improvement works project and have acted as Works Examiner for steel composites bridges, prestressed beam bridges, culverts and retaining walls- experience in implementing the Specification for Highway Works.Other Key Responsibilities- responsible for the health and safety of projects I work on, through considering the CDM Regulations within detailed design or carrying out risk assessments for inspections and site visits and adhering to and adapting where necessary company best practices- hold a CSCS card- assisting with commercial aspects on all projects, from tracking costs and budgets to understanding scope and contract conditions and assisting with compensation events or variations- strong communication skills to liaise with clients, stakeholders, other disciplines, both internally and externally, on large multi-disciplinary projects- line manager for 3 junior members of staff, and mentor to other graduates within the team, offering guidance with work and ICE chartership.

ABOUT BEN CAIRNEY
I am a chartered structural engineer (CEng MICE) with nearly 8 years’ experience in the design, assessment, inspection and construction support of a large variety of civil structures. I am a motivated and adaptable engineer, able to apply my skills to a broad variety of different projects.I have carried out the design or full design check to Eurocodes for numerous multi-span prestressed beam road bridges, steel footbridges, reinforced concrete culverts, steel sheet pile walls, railway station canopy propping systems, reinforced concrete retaining walls, and carried out an FRP strengthening design for a culvert. I also have experience in structural assessments, including a post-tensioned multi-span bridge with temporary propping systems and culverts to Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) assessment codes.I have extensive site experience, having carried out the role of NEC4 Supervisor for a bridge refurbishment project and canal improvement works project and acting as Works Examiner for steel composites bridges, prestressed beam bridges, culverts and retaining walls. I enjoy working either individually or as a team, with a high attention to detail to ensure that deadlines are met, both punctually and to a high standard.
