About Ben Stevenson

I\'m passionate about human dignity, freedom, and economic, social, and climate justice. I\'m currently living in Johannesburg, South Africa and collaborating with Kumi Naidoo on the Fossil Fuel Non-proliferation Treaty Initiative and the Global Artivism movement. As a Hanlon Scholar, I\'m working on an oral history of tenant organizing in response to skyrocketing financial ownership of housing across the U.S. I hope to understand how we can come together to carve out spaces of economic freedom and community which challenge the dominance of finance capitalism and lay the foundation for truly just cities. I\'ve learned so much from friends, teachers, and collaborators in Latin America. I spent this fall in Havana, Cuba studying at La Universidad de La Habana. This spring, I lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina at La Universidad Torcuato di Tella. At age 14, joining the Sunrise Movement set me down the path of fighting—strategically, reflectively, and collectively—for a just world. In high school, I designed and ran policy campaigns at the state and local level on climate justice and transportation—including helping to pass the nationally-recognized Climate Crisis Response Policy and co-founding a coalition to advocate for environmental justice amendments to Portland\'s City Charter. More recently, I have worked to implement the Inflation Reduction Act\'s clean energy provisions across U.S. higher education and led student engagement efforts to shape the transformation of Dartmouth\'s climate scholarship and curriculum.
