Project Objective: Design a Hybrid Rocket Test System for MARS to be used in High-Performance Material testing. The system uses 3D printed fuel grains made of ABS plastic and pure oxygen as the oxidizer. The system is controlled by software written in LabVIEW using a National Instruments DAQ module. The system is designed to maintain either a constant chamber pressure or mass flow rate over a 20-second test fire.• Worked as the primary Electrical Engineer in a team of students consisting of 6 Mechanical Engineers and 1 Computer Engineer. Often worked in groups of 3 or 4 while making design choices and installing hardware.• Facilitated the implementation of an improved throttle system using a high-precision needle valve. This resulted in an extremely linear system, thus reducing the complexity of the PID control parameters.• Designed analog electronics to convert the output of a National Instruments DAQ module into a pulse waveform to control a Stepper Motor, resulting in smoother movement and simpler software.• Designed a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and fabricated using JLCPCB, selected high precision components and ordered from Mouser Electronics.• Devised a method to measure the position of the throttle valve by using a multi-turn potentiometer and a ring gear system. Designed & 3D-Printed gears.• Coordinated the relocation of the main electrical box, eliminating about 35ft of sensor wires. Devised a new layout using a single 50ft Ethernet Cable, resulting in an 80% reduction in sensor measurement errors and simultaneously improving safety during test-fires.• Gained extensive experience soldering, including Through-Hole PCB assembly, soldering cables, connectors, and splicing wires.
