About Becky Andree
My work sits at the intersection of leadership, learning, and complexity—centered on a simple but important question:How do we develop the capacity to think and lead in a world that keeps getting more complex? As Founder of Vertical Leadership Consulting and an Assistant Professor of Management, I bring together scholarship and practice to explore what I describe as complexity of thinking—a capability that grows through both self-awareness and the quality of our connections with others.Much of leadership development focuses on skills and behaviors. Those matter. But lasting development happens when people begin to shift how they make sense of their experiences, interpret context, and engage with different perspectives.I think of this as the “hidden curriculum”—learning embedded in everyday interactions, conversations, and shared challenges. It’s where leaders build the capacity to navigate ambiguity, stay present in tension, and respond more thoughtfully in moments without clear answers.Across my work with Fortune 100 companies and senior government leaders, I support individuals and teams in developing this capacity—using research-informed assessments and tailored approaches that focus not just on what leaders do, but how they think, interpret, and relate. In the classroom, I teach Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management through this same lens. My goal is not only to prepare students for today’s workplace, but to help them develop the awareness and relational capability needed for what’s ahead—especially as technologies like AI continue to reshape how we work and lead.I see my role less as delivering content and more as creating the conditions for deeper learning—where students can question, reflect, and see more of what’s shaping their choices and interactions.Originally from a small Wisconsin farm town, I was shaped by an environment where awareness and connection were part of everyday life. On a farm, you learn quickly that things don’t respond to force—they respond to attention. You notice patterns, conditions, and subtle shifts, and rely on others in ways that build real connection and shared responsibility. That early experience continues to influence how I approach leadership and development today. I value practical insight, clear thinking, and meaningful connection—not as ideals, but as essential capabilities for navigating complexity. If you’re interested in developing leaders who can hold complexity, build genuine connection, and navigate what’s next with greater awareness—I’d welcome the conversation.
