ABOUT BECKIE CALDER-FLYNN

In my current role as Sustainability Officer at Mosa Meat, I lead work integrating sustainability across our operations and decision-making and reducing the footprint of our operations and products. This work strikes a balance between strategic, future planning with operations design and behaviour change. I\'m passionate about global food system reform given our need to feed a growing population without further damaging our environment and see sustainable food systems playing a key role in curbing emissions, halting biodiversity declines and land conversion, improving animal welfare, and increasing global nutrition and food availability. Most recently, I led the company through the B Corp certification and in doing so Mosa Meat became the first cultivated meat company in the world to receive this. I spend southern hemisphere winters based in Niue working at Niue Blue as a humpback whale guide, Divemaster and snorkel guide - spending time in the ocean and educating people about coral reefs, humpback whales and tropical ocean species. In my previous role at the Ministry for the Environment, I worked as a senior analyst on freshwater science policy with a focus on the evidence base and tools we have to assess the state of New Zealand\'s freshwater resources and design policy options to address environmental challenges. In the Environmental Reporting Programme to produce New Zealand\'s State of the Environment reports, co-authoring Environment Aotearoa 2019, Our Marine Environment 2019, and most recently Our freshwater 2020. These reports provide New Zealanders with independent, robust and trusted information on the state of Aotearoa\'s environment, and are based on the most up-to-date environmental data available from Crown Research Institutes, Government agencies, and more recently citizen science. The information provided in our reports is critical for decision-makers, councils, NGO\'s, politicians, and the public to understand the state of Aotearoa\'s natural environment and act to make environmental improvements. I have been involved in conservation and sustainability initiatives including low emission shifts in catering and transport, front-line anti-poaching activities with forest elephants, wildlife rehabilitation and data collection, public education and engagement on conservation and sustainability issues, science communication, climate change science engagement, and sustainability at the central government level.
