About Brandon Courtney
Brandon has been assisting employees in striving for excellence in their roles for over a decade. He has overseen every process of employee development form recruitment to orientation, onboarding, career mapping and development, compliance, succession planning, and offboarding. As a Human Relation Professional it is important to balance the needs of the employee and the overall needs of the company. Ultimately when employees have a supportive environment and are satisfied it translates to satisfied customers. HR should play a key role in being aware of the company culture and enlisting leadership to respond to issues effectively. He believes employees benefit from a solid orientation and onboarding process. One of the key elements of onboarding is sharing the company’s story and mission. New employees should be encouraged to discover how they will be part of this story. Career mapping early on allows employees to have a direction for growth and purpose for their work. New employees benefit from quickly establishing both short and long term goals. In addition, establishing early mentorship, feedback and guidance develops relationships that lead to improved connection and retention. HR plays a role in ensuring that an effective onboarding process is in place and the onboarding plan is being implemented. HR also has role in connecting regularly with seasoned employees and working towards them accepting new challenges and growth. This prevents employees from experiencing stagnation. This is most effective when employees are encouraged to accept new responsibilities, cross train on different roles, and have the ability to advance in the company. HR should work with employees to develop a career growth plan. This may require training or increased education opportunities. HR can play a strong role in this process when they have knowledge of both employment and educational opportunities. In addition to knowing benefits HR should also be aware of scholarships and educational opportunities for employees. Overall the role of HR is to help employees and leadership develop growth strategies for both employees and the company as whole. HR also plays a role in identifying and removing blocks to employee satisfaction. At times HR needs to respond quickly and effectively to issues that are negatively impacting employee performance, or company culture or liability. Policies should create an environment of safety and professionalism, but at the same time allow enough autonomy for employees to have initiative and independent achievement.
