About Barton Poulson
I help people do good things with data. I founded datalab.cc to provide concise, applied training through free video courses on data analysis and data science. I have also created dozens of courses for LinkedIn Learning on statistics and data-driven decision-making. In addition, I am a Professor of Psychological Science at Utah Valley University, where I teach data skills to undergraduate students in the Psychology and Counseling Department. I earned a PhD and an MPhil in Social and Personality Psychology from the City University of New York, and a certificate in Arts Technology from the University of Utah. My background in psychology and the arts has given me a special interest in the complexities that people face in their own lives and the ways that they can integrate their experience and creativity into their work. I see data work – a term I use to embrace statistics, data analytics, data science, business intelligence, and data-driven decision-making – as, more than anything, an exercise in interpretation and meaning-making. Data work relies on many of the same broad skills as translating a poem from one language to another or making a movie based on a biography. Being sensitive to context, purpose, and richness will make for better work in all of these settings. The greatest compliments that I have received were comparisons to two other people. One person called me the \"Mister Rogers of data science,\" and another called me the \"Bob Ross of data science.\" I am deeply honored to be in their kind, welcoming company. My goal here on LinkedIn is straightforward: I want to help people use simple data methods to find practical, humanistic solutions to real-life problems, because I believe that #DataIsForDoing.
