About Barbara Herring

I am a certified K-6 teacher with over 10 years experience teaching in public schools in North Carolina and 15 years teaching at Cape Fear Academy, an independent, college preparatory, coed day school for grades PreK through 12, in Wilmington, NC in their Learning Skills Program. In 1994, I was trained by the International Dyslexia Association to teach children with specific learning disabilities using the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching, which is a sequential, phonics-based system that teaches the basics of word formation. Its success is due to the utilization of a multi-sensory approach, using visual, auditory and kinesthetic pathways for optimum learning. It has been extremely rewarding helping children understand how they learn, recognize their strengths, and become an advocate for their specific needs. They develop a greater sense of independence and self-confidence in their academic performance, which results in maximum development of each student\'s potential.
