Main focus: Wideband antennas and RF calibration for 21-cm cosmologyDesigning and optimizing loaded folded bow-tie antennas covering 50–250 MHz with minimal beam chromaticity and high polarization purity for precision radiometry. Developing a wideband self-matching strategy (without external networks) to suppress internal reflections and artificial spectral features in the receive chain. ABOUT BAHRAM KHALICHI
High-frequency EM and RF engineer with 10+ years of experience in applied and computational EM, including antenna systems, microwave components, and electromagnetic modeling. Strong background in full-wave simulation, RF measurements, and simulation-to-measurement validation using ANSYS Electronics Desktop, CST Studio Suite, FEKO, and AWR Microwave Office. Proven record in model validation, solver setup/debugging, and troubleshooting, including S-parameter and impedance interpretation through VNA measurements, RF lab diagnostics, and anechoic chamber characterization. Experienced in diagnosing impedance mismatches, electromagnetic coupling, reflections, and interference mechanisms in complex RF systems. Skilled in translating electromagnetic theory into practical hardware solutions through modeling, prototype validation, RF debugging, and structured technical communication. Experienced in building reproducible EM simulation workflows with automation and clear documentation for multidisciplinary teams. Additional background includes scientific computing and plasma/nanophotonic modeling across radio to optical frequencies. Open to relocation within the United States and available for work-related travel.My research interests include computational and applied electromagnetics, optimization, and nanophotonics. I received my Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University, Türkiye, in 2020. Following the Ph.D, I was a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Nanotechnology Research Center (NANOTAM), Bilkent University, from October 2020 to April 2022. I then joined the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (CIMS), New York University, as a Postdoctoral Associate until August 2024. I am currently a Researcher with the Radio Astronomy Laboratory, Department of Astronomy, University of California at Berkeley. I received the Seal of Excellence for the project proposal under the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (HORIZON-MSCA-2021-PF-01-01—MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2021) with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, in addition to several travel grants. I was a recipient of the Antennas and Propagation Society 2018 Doctoral Research Award, the 2019 Best Ph.D. Research Award at Bilkent University, the 2018 and 2020 Exceptional Teaching Assistant Awards, and the 2022 Best Ph.D. Thesis Award from the Türkiye Section.
