Stanley Medical College (SMC) is a government medical college with hospitals located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is a part of the public healthcare system of India. The seed for this institution was sown as early as 1740 when the East India Company first created the medical department. The Stanley Hospital now stands on the old site of the Monegar Choultry established in 1782. By legacy, the hospital\'s anatomy department receives corpses for scientific study from the Monegar Choultry. In 1799, the Madras Native Infirmary was established with Monegar Choultry and leper asylum providing medical services. By 1830, a hospital and a dispensary were endowed in the native infirmary. The first graduating class was awarded their Licensed Medical Practitioner (LMP) diplomas in 1911. Over the years, the hospital and college have grown to include a multitude of medical disciplines, affiliated institutes and programs. Some of the major hospitals under SMC are: Government Stanley Hospital, Chennai Government Raja Sir Ramasamy Mudaliar Lying-in Hospital, Chennai Government Hospital for Thoracic Medicine, Tambaram, Chennai Government Peripheral Hospital, Tondiarpet, Chennai The College is associated with the Government Stanley Hospital which handles one of the highest out-patient footfall in the country along with in-patient care. Its surgical departments are euipped with state-of-the-art facilities capable of performing up to 40 surgeries simultaneously, and separate blocks for various other medical speciality sciences. The hospital & college are committed to propagating and expanding medical college. Stanley Medical Journal is one such program laying emphasis on the importance of research. Admissions into the institute is highly coveted and competitive at a national level. This institution is savored as a heritage and will continue to impart its finest knowledge to the community in the years to come.
